Adam Immerwahr co-leads Village Theatre, the second largest professional producing theater in Washington State, in partnership with Managing Director Laura Lee. Adam comes to Village Theatre from Washington DC, where he served as Artistic Director of Theater J—the nation’s premier Jewish theater—transforming the theater’s reputation and operations and building several nationally acclaimed programs including the Expanding the Canon initiative which commissioned seven racially and ethnically diverse Jewish writers of color to write new plays that center the stories and experiences of Jews of color. He previously served as the Associate Artistic Director at McCarter Theatre, a Tony Award-winning theater in Princeton NJ, and as Resident Director of Passage Theatre, in Trenton, NJ. Adam’s producing credits include new works by Edward Albee, Christopher Durang, Danai Gurira, Fiasco Theater, Will Power, Stephen Wadsworth, Tarell McCraney, and Ken Ludwig, several of which have transferred to Broadway or off-Broadway.

As a director, Adam’s work has been seen at some of the top theaters in the country, including The Public and Theater Row (both for Summer Play Festival), Ensemble Studio Theatre, Walnut Street Theatre, Woolly Mammoth, McCarter Theater, Cleveland Play House, Theater J, Passage Theater, Luna Stage, Hangar Theater, Bristol Riverside, and many others. Internationally, he directed the African premiere of The Convert (nominated for Zimbabwe’s National Arts Medal). He serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of the Alliance for Jewish Theater, and is an inaugural member of the Drama League Director's Council. Adam is a graduate of Brown University, where he studied both Theater and Renaissance/Early Modern Studies.

The focus on expanding representation and creating opportunities for diverse voices in theater feels especially meaningful, and I think programs like Expanding the Canon can leave a lasting influence on the arts community. His journey through directing, producing, and leadership reminds me of Slope Rider, where progress comes from balancing creativity, vision, and resilience through every challenge. I would love to see how his leadership continues shaping productions and storytelling at Village Theater.

I’d love to hear what his vision is for Village Theatre in terms that's not my neighbor of how it contributes to the Issaquah/Everett region (and maybe broader) in 2024-25.
